<image:caption>This is Kellen. Our Elder team in Kenya identified Kellen in late 2014 as a promising candidate for sponsorship. She was about to graduate from 8th grade with an excellent academic record, but had no hope of entering high school due to financial hardship within the family. Our US team identified a sponsor for Kellen, and the match was made. She completed high school in 2018 with strong marks. Fast forward to 2025, Kellen is a college graduate from the Thika School of Medical Sciences with a diploma in Counseling Psychology, and is employed as a nursing assistant. <image:title>Home - Imani Kenya Projects: Community Empowerment</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Imani Kenya team has been working with the community of Thuura in Meru County to establish a coffee farming business, combining a coffee farm with a modern processing plant, and to empower this community to transform its own economy. With a new source of income from coffee farming and processing, Thuura will now be able to send its own children through higher levels of education. But, before coffee farming would have been possible, the first step was to establish a supply of running water directly to this Thuura community from the river three miles away.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pastor Jacob is speaking to the Kiraria Primary School students during a mission trip to Meru, Kenya. Christian education classes, daily chapel services and prayer times are foundational elements in the vast majority of primary schools and high schools in Kenya. For the Kenyan people as a whole, faith in God is the primary driving force for joy in their lives, and higher education is key to having confidence in their future and that of their country. Imani Kenya strives to be a faithful partner by sponsoring higher education for Kenya’s disadvantaged bright and deserving youth.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - The Road to Higher Education</image:title>
<image:caption>The road to higher education in Kenya follows a familiar progression of steps from primary school to high school, and then on to higher education in the form of many fine colleges, universities and vocational schools. Good grades and strong scores on standardized placement exams can assure students of the opportunity to advance to the next level. However, only grade school is free and available for all children to attend. For economically challenged families, the costs of high school and beyond are simply out of reach and the road to higher education can come to a dead end. However, sponsorships change that narrative, and change lives. Brenda, in this photo, has been sponsored through Imani Kenya since 2014 and performed very well in high school with excellent marks. She is now a college graduate of Kenyatta University in Nairobi, earning her Bachelor of Economics and Statistics Degree in the Fall of 2021 with honors. Brenda is our first college graduate and is successfully self-employed as an entrepreneur. Brenda has been named as an Ambassador of our Imani Kenya Foundation. Congratulations, Brenda!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Daniel lives with his wife, Nancy, in Meru. Both are very active in their local community church, MCK Kirogine, where Daniel served as Chairman for two consecutive 2-year terms. They have three adult children, two sons and a daughter, and three grandchildren. Daniel’s profession is in building and construction, primarily in Meru County. He put his high school education to work and learned the rest of his career knowledge through “on the job” experience. While Daniel did not have the opportunity to attend college after high school, all three of his children are college graduates, with his daughter earning her degree in communications, and both sons earning degrees in engineering. One of Daniel’s passions is getting to know all of the families in his surrounding community, and being available to them for guidance and support when needed. With the church and primary school nearby, he knows the church leaders and school administrators and teachers, as well as the students and their families. These close relationships have been key to identifying which students might become ideal candidates for sponsorship when nearing graduation from primary school. When selecting graduating 8th graders for sponsorship consideration, Daniel and Harrison working together form a powerful team.</image:caption>

Harrison enjoys his career that has spanned 12 years in banking and 15 years as a marketing and sales manager for two motor vehicle companies. He holds two diplomas, one in Marketing and Administration, and one in Sales and Marketing. Also, he is currently engaged in coffee farming on 1.5 acres with 2000 coffee plants. His volunteer positions include 6 years as Chairman and 2 years as Treasurer of the MCK Kirogine Church, and 6 years as Chairman of the nearby Kiraria Primary School. He served as Chairman of the Teaching and Referral Hospital - Meru, and is currently Vice Chairman of the Meru County Municipality Board. <image:caption>Part 2 of our Mission is and to empower communities through economic development projects that will allow families to send their own children on to higher education. Members of our 2018 mission team are seen visiting with residents from Thuura, which is a community about 15 miles outside of the city of Meru. At that point in time, the Thuura Water Project was well underway, but the Thuura Coffee Project was still a pipe dream! Now, a couple of years later, Thuura has running water for residential use and for irrigation. They now also have a few thousand coffee plants on their way to bearing fruit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Mission - The Imani Kenya Mission, Part 1</image:title>
<image:caption>Part 1 of our Mission is to match bright and deserving graduating 8th graders who would not otherwise be able to attend high school, and potentially college, with financial sponsors and local mentors. In this photo taken in 2015, from left to right, we meet Sheila, Kellen, Mercy, Brenda and Faith. These were the first 5 students in the Imani Scholars program, a group we call the Charter Class. Only through sponsorships have these girls been able to attend high school. Completing high school is a major milestone in the lives of Kenya’s young people, and some will go on to higher education, while others may go directly into the workforce.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Story - Our Story</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Story began on the morning of January 9th, 2014, in a hospital room in Dallas, Texas. It began with a new friend, a prayer and a dream. Actually, two dreams were on a collision course. My new friend was Pastor Jacob. The prayer was for a successful operation. The dream came that night, and a voice spoke to me: “go out into the world and find a child that needs your help”. A few days later, I shared my dream with Jacob — and he shared his dream of giving back to his home community through the education of disadvantaged young people. Jacob reached out to community leaders back home in Kenya, Harrison and Daniel, and they identified Brenda based on her circumstances and capabilities. Brenda was that child that needed my help, and I became her sponsor. But then came another sign, a gentle whisper. Shortly afterward, Faith was identified in the same way and I soon had two girls to sponsor for higher education. We also had the early inspiration for the name of this evolving organization: Imani Kenya (“Imani” means “Faith, confidence” in Swahili). Since that time, we have shared our dreams and experiences with several individuals and small groups, and through this process, as of 2025, we have had over 30 young people under sponsorship among 19 sponsor families from 5 different churches. Most of these students are girls, and a few are boys. We provide our students with smartphones for the purpose of communicating directly and regularly with their sponsors and mentors. Students talk and chat with their sponsors via WhatsApp, and are required to send grade reports to their sponsors three times per year. Students call us “Mom” or “Dad”, and we call them our “daughters and sons”. We put together a WhatsApp chat group named “Family”, and its purpose is to keep everyone well informed, moving forward together, and inspired to be the best they can be. This chat group includes all students, sponsors, mentors, community leaders, and a few friends of the Imani Kenya organization. In 2017, something unexpected happened. We learned about a community of over 200 families on the outskirts of Meru County that had no running water. The women spent all their time and energy walking three miles back and forth to the river to fetch jugs of water. The community was poor and not well educated, but it had fertile land as a potential resource. Our sponsor group rallied and funded projects to pipe water directly to the community; and to equip the residents to plant, harvest, and market coffee to the world. Thus, this entire community is becoming empowered to transform its own economy, and will be able to send its own children on to achieve higher levels of education. We believe that education and empowerment are the keys to individuals and communities reaching their full potential. As we continue to grow Imani Kenya, we will remain dedicated to educating disadvantaged young people in Kenya, and empowering communities to do the same for their children, all for the benefit of Kenya and the world we share. <image:title>About Kenya - Republic of Kenya</image:title>
<image:caption>Kenya is an East African country of nearly 48 million people, and became independent from Britain in 1963 after its colonial period as British East Africa. Both Swahili and English are widely spoken languages. Kenya’s economy relies heavily on agriculture, with tea and coffee being its primary cash crops. The country is 86% Christian, 11% Muslim, with 3% traditional and other. Kenya is a democratic republic with a government structure similar to that of the United States. The current president is Uhuru Kenyatta, educated in Kenya and in the US at Amherst College in Massachusetts. Kenya is a beautiful country located in East Africa on the equator, with lovely people, extraordinary geography, bountiful wildlife, and is a photographer’s dream. Photos from top left clockwise: (1) Mt. Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa at 17,057 feet in elevation, (2) one of our sponsored scholars, Mercy, and her lovely grandmother, Salome, (3) map of Kenya with Nairobi as its capital of nearly 4.5 million people; and Meru near the center of the country close to Mt. Kenya, and (4) the beautiful and plentiful flowering plant called Trumpet Vine.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Become a Mentor</image:title>
<image:caption>Purity graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nairobi in 2016. She visited Kiraria Primary, where she attended as a child, to share her experiences and promote higher education. Purity is now a mentor to one of our Imani Scholars, and will work with her student as a counsellor and friend throughout her mentee’s education and transition into the work environment. Ideally, mentors should reside in the same city as their student. To learn more about becoming a mentor, please contact us for more information. In the photo below, students are doing projects in the math and science lab at St. Mary’s Girls’ High School in Igoji, Meru County. Purity graduated from St. Mary’s, which is a highly rated National High School from which many students can go on to higher education with the right support.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Become a Sponsor</image:title>
<image:caption>Gerry and his wife, Barbara, became Mercy’s sponsors beginning in late 2014, and Gerry visited Mercy at her home in Meru in 2015. Mercy’s grandmother, Salome, was a gracious host for the small group that included Pastor Jacob (left) and Elder Daniel (right). Gerry and Barbara also began sponsoring Kellen in 2014. Sponsors can reside anywhere in the world. The annual cost to sponsor a high school student is $1200, plus an additional cost of $150 in the first year for a smartphone. For those students that go on to college, the average annual cost is approximately $2500, plus an additional cost of approximately $500 for a computer in the first year. Sponsorship checks are mailed to our Foundation annually for high school or semi-annually for college, with 100% going toward the education of these students. All administrative costs are covered by separate donations. To learn more about becoming a sponsor, please contact us for more information. In the photo below, sponsored students have just received their smartphones which allow them to communicate directly with their sponsors and mentors, primarily via WhatsApp chats and phone calls.</image:caption>
